WhodiniMembers: Jalil (Jalil Hutchins) Ecstasy (John Fletcher) Grandmaster Dee (Drew Carter) How they got started: Formed in the early 80's, the group got its start in an unusual way. Thomas Dolby, known for the classic 8o's track "She Blinded Me With Science," brought in a track to Jive, where it was suggested someone rap over it. The label recruited Jalil and Ecstasy to record a track about radio personality Mister Magic. The song was a hit in Europe but not in New York, and the group opted to use tracks recorded from European producers for their entire set. It was not a success. Little known fact: They were the first group to include official dancers in their show. The performers were Dr. Ice and Kangol Kid of UTFO. Career highlights: The platinum Escape is Whodini's most successful album. Featuring "Friends," "Freaks Come Out at Night" and "Big Mouth," it was the highest selling rap album ever for a while. Other hits included the classics "Funky Beat" and "One Love." In 1996, they put out a cool EP called "SIX". By the time their next album came out, LL Cool J's hard hitting rhymes stole the thunder from their more dance-oriented tracks. They went on to record additional albums and put in an appearance on a moderately successful single on Terminator X's second album. A few members appeared in the documentary film The Show, but they have since faded from the scene.
