White Sands is a census-designated place located in Doa Ana County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,323. See also White Sands Missile Range and White Sands National Monument.

Geography

White Sands is located at 32°23'3" North, 106°29'52" West (32.384064, -106.497698). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.0 km² (3.1 mi²). 8.0 km² (3.1 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 1,323 people, 432 households, and 355 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 165.8/km² (429.2/mi²). There are 667 housing units at an average density of 83.6/km² (216.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 71.43% White, 11.56% African American, 0.98% Native American, 3.70% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 6.27% from other races, and 5.97% from two or more races. 17.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 432 households out of which 56.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 72.0% are married couples living together, 6.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.8% are non-families. 16.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 0.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.06 and the average family size is 3.45. In the CDP the population is spread out with 37.3% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 39.7% from 25 to 44, 13.0% from 45 to 64, and 0.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 27 years. For every 100 females there are 105.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 103.7 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $43,500, and the median income for a family is $47,750. Males have a median income of $40,402 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $16,186. 2.6% of the population and 1.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.8% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
