West St. Paul, MinnesotaWest St. Paul is a city located in Dakota County, Minnesota, immediately south of the city of Saint Paul, Minnesota. The quirky naming comes from the fact that the city is on the "west" bank of the Mississippi River—the river flows toward the east at this point. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 19,405. Geography According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.0 km² (5.0 mi²). 13.0 km² (5.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.40% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 19,405 people, 8,645 households, and 4,875 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,495.5/km² (3,874.2/mi²). There are 8,779 housing units at an average density of 676.6/km² (1,752.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 87.27% White, 2.83% African American, 0.62% Native American, 1.89% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 4.88% from other races, and 2.49% from two or more races. 9.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 8,645 households out of which 24.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.4% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.6% are non-families. 37.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.20 and the average family size is 2.93. In the city the population is spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.1 males. The median income for a household in the city is $41,103, and the median income for a family is $56,786. Males have a median income of $39,344 versus $29,836 for females. The per capita income for the city is $23,558. 5.9% of the population and 3.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.6% of those under the age of 18 and 5.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
