West Sand Lake, New York

West Sand Lake is a hamlet (and census-designated place) located in Rensselaer County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 2,439. The community is located in the northwest corner of the Town of Sand Lake.

Geography

West Sand Lake is located at 42°38'40" North, 73°36'21" West (42.644579, -73.605928). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 12.4 km² (4.8 mi²). 12.3 km² (4.7 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.84% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 2,439 people, 907 households, and 685 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 198.7/km² (514.1/mi²). There are 944 housing units at an average density of 76.9/km² (199.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 98.89% White, 0.16% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.49% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.33% from two or more races. 0.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 907 households out of which 38.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.2% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% are non-families. 20.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.09. In the CDP the population is spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 5.9% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 28.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 93.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.9 males. The median income for a household in the CDP is $53,000, and the median income for a family is $69,167. Males have a median income of $39,909 versus $31,890 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $27,226. 6.8% of the population and 5.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.4% of those under the age of 18 and 19.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
