West Point is a city located in Clay County, Mississippi. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 12,145. It is the county seat of Clay County.

Geography

West Point is located at 33°36'22" North, 88°39'9" West (33.606155, -88.652369). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 54.6 km² (21.1 mi²). 53.9 km² (20.8 mi²) of it is land and 0.7 km² (0.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.28% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 12,145 people, 4,567 households, and 3,219 families residing in the city. The population density is 225.3/km² (583.5/mi²). There are 4,897 housing units at an average density of 90.9/km² (235.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 42.91% White, 56.18% African American, 0.07% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.43% from two or more races. 0.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,567 households out of which 35.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.9% are married couples living together, 25.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.5% are non-families. 27.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.57 and the average family size is 3.14. In the city the population is spread out with 28.9% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 82.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 77.2 males. The median income for a household in the city is $26,404, and the median income for a family is $32,943. Males have a median income of $30,902 versus $20,255 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,063. 25.1% of the population and 21.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 37.9% of those under the age of 18 and 21.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
