Wayland (Town), New York

Wayland is a town located in Steuben County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 4,314. The Town of Wayland contains a village Wayland. The town is in the northern part of the county.

History

The town was formed in 1848 from the Towns of Cohocton and Dansville.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 102.4 km² (39.5 mi²). 101.1 km² (39.0 mi²) of it is land and 1.3 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.31% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,314 people, 1,665 households, and 1,168 families residing in the town. The population density is 42.7/km² (110.5/mi²). There are 1,960 housing units at an average density of 19.4/km² (50.2/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.47% White, 0.86% Black or African American, 0.44% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 0.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,665 households out of which 35.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.3% are married couples living together, 12.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.8% are non-families. 23.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.03. In the town the population is spread out with 27.9% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 96.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.0 males. The median income for a household in the town is $42,575, and the median income for a family is $46,806. Males have a median income of $33,623 versus $22,439 for females. The per capita income for the town is $18,038. 11.0% of the population and 8.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.8% of those under the age of 18 and 6.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
