The Watzmann is the third highest mountain in Germany (Zugspitze is the highest at 2,962m, Hochwanner the second at 2,746m). The two main peaks are Mittelspitze (2,713m) and Suedspitze (2,712m). The best climbing period is June through October. The easiest route is to follow hiking trails from the city of Berchtesgaden up to the Watzmann Hut at 1,928 metres. One typically spends the night there and then climbs to the summit the next morning. Permanent cables along the ridge makes the traverse safer but the route should not be taken lightly — over 100 people have died on this mountain.
