It is the state's land-grant university. The main campus is in Pullman, located in Eastern Washington, with branch campuses in Vancouver, Spokane, and the Tri-Cities (Richland, Pasco, and Kennewick). The university has strong programs in communication, engineering, and veterinary medicine. History Founded on March 28, 1890 as the State Land-Grant College, the school changed names to the State College of Washington in 1905, and, subsequently, in 1959, to Washington State University. As a land grant institution, the university has been trusted by the state since statehood with 190,000 acres of land for agricultural and scientific research throughout the Pacific Northwest. Campus The 620-acre Pullman campus is located on College Hill in Pullman, a college town which is notable for its hilly environment. Surrounding the campus and town are the rolling wheat fields of the Palouse. Athletics Washington State University is a member of the PAC-10 athletic conference. Athletes, students, and alumni of the university are known as Cougars. An older nickname for the school is Wazzu. The official colors are crimson and gray.
