Warren MoonWarren Moon (born November 18, 1956 in Los Angeles, California) is a retired gridiron football quarterback who played in the Canadian Football League and the National Football League. College In college, he played for the University of Washington Huskies. Moon led the Huskies to a 27-20 win over Michigan in the 1978 Rose Bowl, and was voted MVP for his performance. Pros Between the Canadian Football League and the National Football League, Warren Moon amassed a whopping 70,553 yards passing, a professional football record. CFL Despite his collegiate success, Moon was unable to find employment as a quarterback in the NFL - many commentators suspect because he was African-American. Moon looked north and was signed by the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League. He and Tom Wilkinson formed a powerful quarterback duo and helped lead the Eskimos to an unprecedented five consecutive Grey Cup victories. NFL During his six season tenure in the CFL, teams south of the border took notice. After a bidding war in 1984, Moon was signed by the NFL's Houston Oilers where he would be the starting quarterback for the next ten seasons. (Houston's head coach in 1984 was Hugh Campbell, the man who coached Moon in the CFL.) Moon then spent three seasons in Minnesota and two in Seattle before spending two seasons as a backup in Kansas City. Moon retired in 2000 after 23 professional seasons. The 9-time Pro Bowl Quarterback will be eligible for election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2006 along with former Super Bowl MVP Quarterback Troy Aikman and early 1990's Buffalo Bills stars Running Back Thurman Thomas and Wide-Receiver Andre Reed.
