Ward County, TexasWard County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 10,909. The county seat is Monahans, and the county is named for Thomas W. Ward, a soldier in the Texas Revolution. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,165 km2 (836 mi2). 2,164 km2 (835 mi2) of it is land and 1 km2 (0 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 0.03% water. There are 4,832 housing units at an average density of 2/km2 (6/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 79.79% White, 4.61% Black or African American, 0.66% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 12.52% from other races, and 2.11% from two or more races. 41.98% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,964 households out of which 36.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.80% are married couples living together, 11.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.10% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.15. In the county, the population is spread out with 30.60% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 22.20% from 45 to 64, and 14.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.30 males. The median income for a household in the county is $29,386, and the median income for a family is $36,014. Males have a median income of $31,373 versus $18,198 for females. The per capita income for the county is $14,393. 17.90% of the population and 15.80% of families are below the poverty line.
