Wallops Island

Wallops Island is a space station of NASA in the US Federal State Virginia. The first rocket launch on Wallops Island took place on July 4th, 1945. Thus this rocket launching site is one the oldest in the world. On December 4th, 1959 in the context of the Mercury program from here from the ape SAM on a ballistic flight one sent. Further important tests were accomplished here, as for example the test flights for the escape towers of the Gemini and Apollo projects. Today Wallops Island serves as rocket launching site for sounding rockets and the start of smaller satellites with the booster rocket Scout.
