Wallasey

Wallasey is a town on the mouth of the River Mersey on the tip of the Wirral. The town is built up of seven townships (Liscard, Seacombe, Egremont, New Brighton, Wallasey Village, Poulton and Leasowe) these villages all grew into each other when the Kingsway Tunnel under the River Mersey from Liverpool opened in 1934. Liscard is the main shopping centre. New Brighton was the major holiday resort of the 1960s until the loss of the Tower buildings and the Pier. The transportation links to Liverpool are very good. Every 20 minutes a bus leaves New Brighton and travels through the Kingsway Tunnel, Seacombe is the home of one of the Mersey Ferry terminals and New Brighton & Wallasey Village have a rail link into Birkenhead and Liverpool Lime Street Station. From Poulton the M53 motorway leads through the Wirral peninsula to Chester and the M56 to Manchester Airport. Fort Perchrock and Liscard Battery were built in the area to protect shipping on the Mersey.
