Vive Le Qubec Libre SpeechThe speech of July 24, 1967 by French President Charles de Gaulle, known as the Vive le Qubec Libre speech was given in Montreal on the balcony of the Montreal city hall while he visited Expo 67 in Canada. Most Canadians were outraged at the breach of territorial integrity and saw the words as an insult to the thousands of Canadians who fought and died on the battelfields of France during two World Wars. There was much criticism in the Canadian media, and the Prime Minister of Canada, Lester B. Pearson, a soldier who had fought in World War I and a Nobel Peace Prize winner, stated that "Canadians do not need to be liberated" and cancelled the remainder of the state visit. De Gaulle returned to France where much of the French media criticized him for his serious breach of international protocol. However, the event was seen as a watershed moment by members of the Quebec sovereigntism movement. Je dis c'est la vtre et je me permets d'ajouter, c'est la ntre! Si vous saviez quelle confiance la France, rveille aprs d'immenses preuves, porte maintenant vers vous, si vous saviez quelle affection elle recommence ressentir pour les Franais du Canada et si vous saviez quel point elle se sent oblige de concourir votre marche en avant, votre progrs. C'est pourquoi elle a conclu avec le Gouvernement du Qubec, avec celui de mon ami Johnson, des accords, pour que les Franais de part et d'autre de l'Atlantique travaillent ensemble une mme uvre franaise. Et, d'ailleurs, le concours que la France va, tous les jours un peu plus, prter ici, elle sait bien que vous le lui rendrez, parce que vous tes en train de vous constituer des lites, des usines, des entreprises, des laboratoires, qui feront l'tonnement de tous et qui, un jour, j'en suis sr, vous permettront d'aider la France. Voil ce que je suis venu vous dire ce soir en ajoutant que j'emporte de cette runion inoue de Montral un souvenir inoubliable! La France entire sait, voit, entend, ce qui se passe ici, et je puis vous dire qu'elle en vaudra mieux! Vive Montral!
