Virginia Rappe

Virginia Rappe (September 19, 1895 (conjecture) - September 9, 1921) was an American silent film actress. Her death was believed by many to have been the result of a violent rape by silent film star Fatty Arbuckle; she died of peritonitis caused by a ruptured bladder a few days after attending a party where Arbuckle was present on September 5, 1921 in San Francisco, California. The exact events of the infamous party are still unclear. After three trials Arbuckle was cleared of the charges. Although Rappe had made few movies at the time of her death, the notoriety surrounding her death and the subsequent trial caused movie theaters all over the United States to show her films, billing them as starring the victim of the supposed murder. The Motion Picture Theater Owners of America Association had to step in and ban the showing of all of her films for a time, in order to end the exploitation. Virginia Rappe was buried in Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Rappe, Virginia Rappe, Virginia
