Virgin River Narrows Virgin River Narrows in Zion National Park, located near Springdale, Utah is a 16-mile long slot canyon enclosing part of the Virgin River. Many shorter slot canyons connect to the main canyon. The Virgin River runs north to south though the canyon and hiking through the canyon often entails trudging through cool, knee-deep water. It was recently rated as number five out of National Geographic's Top 100 American Adventures. The canyon walls stretch hundreds of feet high and in places the Narrows close in to between ten and fifteen feet. Usually in the spring and early summer, flash flooding makes the narrow canyons dangerous. Thunderstorms have caught hikers off guard with little warning. Hikers without time to make their way out of the canyon have climbed up on ledges to escape the torrent of water that gushes through the canyons when it rains. External links
