Violet Florence Martin

Violet Florence Martin was born at Ross House, Connamara, Co. Galway in 1862, the youngest of sixteen children of James Martin of Ross (1804-1872). In the very early 1880's she made the acquaintance of her cousin Edith Sommerville and in time began a writing parnership that would last till her death. Violet used the pen-name Martin Ross, which consisted of her surname and the name of her ancestral home; thus the authors were called Sommerville and Ross. Their works include "The Real Charlotte" (1889), "Some Reminisences of an Irish R.M." and "In The Vine Country". Violet was seriously injured in a riding accident in 1899, from which she never fully recovered. This was a contributing factor to her death in 1915.
