Victoria County History

The Victoria History of the Counties of England, commonly known as the Victoria County History or the VCH, is an English history project begun in 1899 in honour of Queen Victoria with the aim of creating an encyclopaedic history of each of the traditional counties of England. The responsibility for writing the volumes was delegated to individual counties. In general the histories begin with some details of the County as a whole, before surveys of each Hundred. The first volume was published in 1901 and publication continued slowly throughout the twentieth century but eventually ground to a halt. The series was restarted in the 1990s, and there are currently more than 230 individual volumes.
