It has the smallest population of any incorporated city in California; most of the city's land area is occupied by industrial facilities. Vernon was incorporated to promote industrial development along the railroads in the area. Geography Vernon is located at 34°0'4" North, 118°12'40" West (34.001213, -118.210979). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.4 km² (5.2 mi²). 12.9 km² (5.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.4 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.10% water.
