Vega (Launcher)

Vega is a planned expendable launch system developed by the European Space Agency since 1998, with the first launch planned for 2007. It is designed to launch small payloads cheaply: 300 to 2000 kg satellites for scientific and Earth observation missions to polar and low earth orbits. It is named after the star Vega. Some of its technologies are derived from the Ariane launchers. It is a single body launcher with three solid rocket stages and a liquid rocket upper module. Vega will face a stiff competition from the very unexpensive Russian and Ukrainian launchers such as Dnepr, Shtil, Volna, Strela, Rockot or Kosmos, as well as from the Falcon I from SpaceX.
