Van Wert County, Ohio

Van Wert County is a county located in the state of Ohio. As of 2000, the population is 29,659. Its county seat is Van Wert6 and is named for Isaac Van Wert, one of the captors of John Andr in the American Revolutionary War.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,063 km² (410 mi²). 1,062 km² (410 mi²) of it is land and 1 km² (0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.10% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 29,659 people, 11,587 households, and 8,354 families residing in the county. The population density is 28/km² (72/mi²). There are 12,363 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (30/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.43% White, 0.75% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.19% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other races, and 0.77% from two or more races. 1.56% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 11,587 households out of which 32.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.20% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.90% are non-families. 24.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.00. In the county, the population is spread out with 26.00% under the age of 18, 8.30% from 18 to 24, 27.30% from 25 to 44, 22.90% from 45 to 64, and 15.50% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.40 males. The median income for a household in the county is $39,497, and the median income for a family is $46,503. Males have a median income of $32,377 versus $23,859 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,293. 5.50% of the population and 4.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.80% of those under the age of 18 and 4.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
