Van Wert, Ohio

Van Wert is a city located in Van Wert County, Ohio. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 10,690. It is the county seat of Van Wert County and is named for Isaac Van Wert, one of the captors of John Andr in the American Revolutionary War..

History

Van Wert was the birthplace of aviation pioneer Walter Hinton.

Geography

Van Wert is located at 40°52'4" North, 84°35'0" West (40.867863, -84.583461). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.8 km² (6.1 mi²). 15.4 km² (5.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.95% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 10,690 people, 4,556 households, and 2,947 families residing in the city. The population density is 696.0/km² (1,803.8/mi²). There are 4,927 housing units at an average density of 320.8/km² (831.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 96.07% White, 1.50% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.35% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.09% from other races, and 0.89% from two or more races. 2.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 4,556 households out of which 29.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.1% are married couples living together, 10.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% are non-families. 31.0% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.31 and the average family size is 2.88. In the city the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 26.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 88.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.1 males. The median income for a household in the city is $33,205, and the median income for a family is $41,711. Males have a median income of $31,441 versus $23,143 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,413. 7.1% of the population and 5.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.4% of those under the age of 18 and 7.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
