Valley Falls, New York

Valley Falls is a village located in Rensselaer County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 491. The Village of Valley Falls lies on the boundary of the towns of Pittstown and Schaghticoke.

Geography

The Hoosic River divides the village. Valley Falls is located at 42°54'3" North, 73°33'45" West (42.900846, -73.562495). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 km² (0.5 mi²). 1.1 km² (0.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.35% water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 491 people, 179 households, and 132 families residing in the village. The population density is 430.9/km² (1,119.6/mi²). There are 191 housing units at an average density of 167.6/km² (435.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 97.35% White, 0.00% African American, 1.43% Native American, 0.81% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.41% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 179 households out of which 42.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.9% are married couples living together, 15.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% are non-families. 19.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.74 and the average family size is 3.20. In the village the population is spread out with 30.8% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 32.8% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 10.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 91.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.1 males. The median income for a household in the village is $56,250, and the median income for a family is $59,583. Males have a median income of $34,808 versus $28,750 for females. The per capita income for the village is $20,989. 4.4% of the population and 7.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 7.4% of those under the age of 18 and 0.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
