. She won the seat at the

, displacing the
cabinet minister
William Waldegrave
. Born in
Surrey
, Davey studied
theology
at the
University of Birmingham
and gained a PGCE at the
University of London
Institue of Education
before teaching in
Wolverhampton
,
Tanzania
and Bristol. She was an
Avon County Councillor
from
1981
until the county's abolition in
1996
and was Labour group leader from
1992
. She was also a governor of various schools and of
Bristol Polytechnic
. She is a member of the
House of Commons
Education and Skills Committee.
