Name Origin "Unown" is a new spelling of the Japanese version of its name, Anon, meaning anonymous. It is also a misspelling of the word "unknown" (meaning lack of knowledge). Information Introduced in Pokmon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, each of the initial 26 variations of Unown represented the 26 letters of English alphabet. Each one was in a shape that was at least vaguely similar to each letter. To facilitate knowing which varieties of Unown the Trainer has caught, an "Unown Mode" can be added to their Pokdex in the Gold, Silver, and Crystal versions. Included in the Unown Mode is a word associated with each Unown. The word each Unown is associated with starts with the same letter of the Unown, e.g. Unown-F is associated with the word "Find." These Pokmon were originally only catchable in the Ruins of Alph, a mysterious archeological site in Johto which only became more mysterious with the addition of many hidden secret chambers in Pokmon Crystal. The new varieties In Pokmon Ruby and Sapphire, two brand new variations of Unown were introduced but remained uncatchable in the game. They are, however, catchable in Pokmon FireRed and LeafGreen. The two new variations represent an exclamation point (!) and a question mark (?). All 28 varieties are catchable in Tanoby Ruins (located on Seven Island in the Sevii Islands) in Pokmon FireRed and LeafGreen. Super Smash Bros. Melee information Unown is one of the Pokmon that the Pokball item can unleash in Super Smash Bros. Melee. In Super Smash Brothers Melee, Unown come in groups and fall like rain, hitting the opponent many times. In the anime Unown is featured in Pokmon the Movie 3 as well as in the TV episode "Address Unown".
