. The university received a
charter
from
Frederick I Barbarossa
in
1158
. In the
19th century
, a committee of historians led by Giosu Carducci traced the birth of the University to
1088
. The University celebrated its 900th year anniversary in
1988
. This makes it perhaps the first and most long-lived
university
in the western world, and globally only the
University of Karueein
in
Fez
and
Cairo
's
Al-Azhar University
are older. The University of Bologna is
historically
notable for its
teaching
of
canon
and
civil law
and as the birthplace of the international fraternity
Kappa Sigma
.
