University HillUniversity Hill is a neighborhood in Syracuse, New York, located directly east of downtown, on one of the few hills in Syracuse. It is the major economical, educational, and medical district of Syracuse, with three of the top ten employers in the Syracuse region being located there, including the largest, Syracuse University, from which its name comes from. "The Hill" is also to home a Veterans Administration Medical Center, the state-run Upstate Medical University and State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry, as well as the private Crouse Memorial Hospital. These five institutions account for over 16,000 full-time positions and over 20,000 students. Combined, Syracuse University, SUNY ESF, and Upstate Medical University house nearly 10,000 students in student housing on the hill, with many others living in private, off-campus housing in the neighborhood. According to the city, over 11,000 people live in the neighborhood. It is estimated by the University Hill Corporation, that over 20,000 people work on "The Hill," with a combined payroll of over $400 million annually.http://www.university-hill.com/Jobs Only the Downtown neighborhood employs more people in Syracuse.http://downtownsyracuse.com/default.aspx?Nav=Work&Control=Content&ProgramName=Work The major retail streets of the neighborhood are Marshall Street and its terminus South Crouse Avenue. The neighborhood is considered to end at the peak of the hill, by Thornden Park, where is borders the Westcott and University Area neighborhoods. The south section of University hill is home to the 82-acre Oakwood Cemetery. History The development of University Hill is directly linked with its top employers today. Syracuse University was founded in 1870, and its first building, the Hall of Languages opened in 1873. SU now has over 250 buildings on University Hill. SUNY Upstate Medical University started as the Syracuse University College of Medicine, and was sold to the state in 1950. Future University Hill continues to grow, mainly led by expansions by Syracuse University and Upstate Medical University. Both are currently expanding their facilities, with SU currently building a new 150,000-square-foot building for their School of Management, and Upstate building a six-storey addition to their hospital. There have been talks between Upstate and Crouse hospitals about a potential merger. A major problem facing University Hill is traffic. Many roads are only two-lane, and cannot handle rush hour traffic. Where possible, some streets have been widened, but many are lined with houses and buildings, often historic, that prevent such improvement. Some streets have been converted to one-way, but in many cases this does not necessarily help, as traffic has to pass through more traffic signals as a result. There are also a very large number of pedestrians, and drivers have to be very alert for j-walkers. Another increasing problem on University Hill is crime. While not an extremely prevalent issue, especially during the day, night-time violence, especially towards students has increased. In most cases it is mugging, with the aggressor simply wanting money or another valuable. Seeing that assault beyond demanding money is rare, it most likely only has to do with the poverty of the surrounding neighborhoods. Employers - Syracuse University: 7,415 Employees (Up 3.7%)
