United States Forces JapanUnited States Forces Japan, or USFJ, refers to the various divisions of the United States Armed Forces that are stationed in Japan. There are currently 47,000 U.S. military personnel in Japan, and another 5,500 American civilians employed there by the United States Department of Defense. By the terms of the Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security, USFJ is responsible for the security of the Japanese archipelago past its 12-nmi territorial waters. Within this limit, the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) are responsible for security. The USFJ headquarters is at Yokota Air Base, about 30 km west of central Tokyo.
