United National Congress

The United National Congress is one of the major political organisations of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. It is led by Basdeo Panday, a former trade unionist. The party was founded in 1989 following a split in the ruling National Alliance for Reconstruction. It won the 1995 and 2000 elections and won 18 seats in the House of Representatives in the tied elections of 2001. The party proceeded to lose the 2002 elections by a margin of 16 - 20. At present the party holds 16 of the 36 parliamentary seats in the House of Representatives, making it the current opposition in parliament to the ruling People's National Movement (PNM) government, which holds the other 20 seats.
