Unicron Crisis

Unicron is the largest Transformer known, with the form of a mechanical planet capable of devouring other planets. His one weakness is the Autobot Matrix of Leadership, which possesses the ability to destroy him.

Transformers, The Movie

In the Earth year 2005, Unicron entered known space and consumed the planet Lithone. Meanwhile on Earth, The Battle of Autobot City claimed the life of Optimus Prime, leader of the Autobots and holder of the Autobot Matrix of Leadership, and contributed to the overthrow of Megatron. Once the Matrix was exposed to Hot Rod, a power surge was detected by Unicron, who then proceeded to Cybertron. On the way, Unicron encountered Megatron and several Decepticons who had been jettisoned from Astrotrain. Unicron reformatted them into Galvatron, Scourge, the Sweeps, and Cyclonus (And his armada). Galvatron first went towards Cybertron to attend to other business; Unicron followed. Moon Base One, orbiting cybertron, was the first to detect the approach of Unicron. The Autobot station was evacuated shortly before Unicron consumed the body. Turning to Moon Base Two, Bumblebee and Spike Witwicky prepared to escape, setting explosives before they went to destroy Unicron when he attempted to consume it. At first appearing successful, they soon realized that Unicron had not been damaged in the least. Their escape shuttle was then pulled in to Unicron. After Galvatron acquired the Matrix from Ultra Magnus, he returned to Unicron with the intention of making Unicron his slave. This angered Unicron, who transformed into an extremely large humanoid robot, dropped Galvatron down his mouth, and began tearing chunks out of Cybertron with his hands. Around this time, the Autobots, lead by Ultra Magnus, crashed through Unicron's eye in a starship of Quintesson design. They spilled out into Unicron's inner passages and became separated. After wandering alone for several minutes inside Unicron, Hot Rod came upon Galvatron, wearing the Matrix on a chain around his neck. Galvatron briefly offered a truce, but then Unicron forced Galvatron into fighting with Hot Rod. During the skirmish, Hot Rod was able to pull the Matrix away. Upon contact with the Matrix, he was reformatted into Rodimus Prime. Able to harness the power of the Matrix, Rodimus opened the casing and triggered the destruction of Unicron, save for his head, which remains in orbit of Cybertron.

Transformers: Generation One Comic

In this version, Unicron is drawn to Cybertron because Primus, his arch-nemesis, is located on the planet. Events unfold similar to above, except in the end, it is Optimus Prime who unleashes the power of the matrix and destroys Unicron. Optimus Prime died from injuries sustained from the blast, until being revived by The Last Autobot.
