Twisp, Washington

Twisp is a town located in Okanogan County, Washington. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 938.

History

Twisp was originally platted in 1897, and officially incorporated on August 13, 1909.

Geography

  is located at 48°21'50" North, 120°7'11" West (48.363971, -120.119620). 
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.0 km² (1.2 mi²). 3.0 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.85% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 938 people, 438 households, and 258 families residing in the town. The population density is 312.2/km² (807.9/mi²). There are 505 housing units at an average density of 168.1/km² (434.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 96.16% White, 0.00% African American, 0.96% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.75% from other races, and 1.60% from two or more races. 2.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 438 households out of which 29.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.5% are married couples living together, 16.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.9% are non-families. 34.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.13 and the average family size is 2.70. In the town the population is spread out with 24.2% under the age of 18, 5.3% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 86.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 84.2 males. The median income for a household in the town is $26,354, and the median income for a family is $31,944. Males have a median income of $26,250 versus $17,857 for females. The per capita income for the town is $16,257. 19.8% of the population and 14.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.3% of those under the age of 18 and 8.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
