Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan

Trkmenbaşy is a city in Turkmenistan, part of the Balkan Province, on the shore of the Caspian Sea. Population 51,000.

History

The city was founded in 1869 and until the 1990s it was named Krasnovodsk (Красноводск), the Russian version of the original name, Kyzyl-Su (Red Water). In 1993 it was renamed by president Saparmurat Niyazov, after his self-proclaimed title Trkmenbaşy ("Leader of the Turkmen").

Transportation

A ferry service connects Turkmenbashi to Baku, Azerbaijan.
