TuriecTuriec is the name of: Turiec county Turiec (-Slovak, in Latin: Thurotzium, comitatus Thurociensis, in German: Turz, in Hungarian: Turc) is the name of a historic administrative county (comitatus) of the Kingdom of Hungary. Its territory is presently in north-western Slovakia, where it is only an informal designation of the corresponding territory. Geography Turiec county shared borders with the Hungarian counties Nyitra (Nitra), Trencsn (Trenčn), rva (Orava), Lipt (Liptov), Zlyom (Zvolen) and Bars (Tekov). Situated between the Mal Fatra and Veľk Fatra Mountains. The river Turiec flowed through the county. Its area was 1123 km² around 1910. Capitals The capitals of Turiec county were the Sklabiňa Castle and Martin, since 1772 only Martin. History Turiec county as a Hungarian comitatus arose before the 15th century. In 1918 (confirmed by the Treaty of Trianon 1920), Turiec county became part of newly formed Czechoslovakia. During World War II, when Czechoslovakia was split temporarily, Turiec was part of independent Slovakia. After World War II Turiec county was in Czechoslovakia again. In 1993, Czechoslovakia was split and Turiec became part of Slovakia. Districts In the early 20th century, the districts and their capitals were: Turiec river Turiec is the name of a river (66,3 km) in northern Slovakia, entering into the Vh in the town of Martin and having its source in the Veľk Fatra Mountains.
