Tuonela

Tuonela is the realm of the dead in Finnish mythology. Words associated with death in the Finnish mythology include:
  • Tuonela: A peaceful place, where children and "pure" innocent people went after death.
  • Manala: The place of common people after death, possibly the same as Tuonela: "Menn manan majoille"; to go to the houses of Mana (death).
  • Surma: Accidental death or death in war: "Joutua surman suuhun"; to fall into death's mouth.
  • Kalma: Death caused by sickness or malady: "Hneen tarttui kalman koura"; Kalma's hand gripped him.
