Tunica County, Mississippi Tunica County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 9,227. Its county seat is Tunica6. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,245 km² (481 mi²). 1,178 km² (455 mi²) of it is land and 67 km² (26 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 5.40% water. Demographics As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,227 people, 3,258 households, and 2,192 families residing in the county. The population density is 8/km² (20/mi²). There are 3,705 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 27.54% White, 70.15% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.42% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 0.96% from other races, and 0.75% from two or more races. 2.53% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 3,258 households out of which 33.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.90% are married couples living together, 26.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.70% are non-families. 26.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.80 and the average family size is 3.44. In the county the population is spread out with 31.50% under the age of 18, 10.90% from 18 to 24, 27.40% from 25 to 44, 20.20% from 45 to 64, and 10.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 91.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.90 males. The median income for a household in the county is $23,270, and the median income for a family is $25,443. Males have a median income of $25,244 versus $18,104 for females.
