Tsakhiagiyn Elbegdorj

Elbegdorj Tsakhia (Цахиагийн Элбэгдорж) (born March 30 1963 in Zereg, Hovd province, Mongolia) is the Prime Minister of Mongolia. Elbegdorj was educated as a journalist in the Ukraine, Lvov. Later he was educated in Harvard University. When he returned to Mongolia he became active in the movement to replace the Communist one-party state with a Democratic, reformist government. In 1990 he became famous for standing on chairs, making speeches against the government. He was elected to Parliament in 1990 until 1992, but resigned in 1994 in protest over a scandal. He was re-elected in 1996, remaining a popular politician, and becoming the head of a major political party, the Mongolian National Democratic Party. He was unable to join the cabinet because of rules forbidding members of Parliament from being in the cabinet, but these rules were changed in 1998. Elbegdorj became Prime Minister in March 1998, by the choice of his Democratic Union Coalition, in which his party was the largest member. He resigned in December 1998 following a banking scandal. He became Prime Minister again on August 20, 2004, in a coalition with the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party, after disputed parliamentary elections. Tsakhiagiyn Elbegdorj
