Troy, North Carolina

Troy is a town located in Montgomery County, North Carolina. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,430. It is the county seat of Montgomery County.

Geography

Troy is located at 35°21'38" North, 79°53'47" West (35.360420, -79.896412). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.34% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 3,430 people, 1,108 households, and 710 families residing in the town. The population density is 445.9/km² (1,156.8/mi²). There are 1,209 housing units at an average density of 157.2/km² (407.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 54.43% White, 38.98% African American, 0.73% Native American, 1.14% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 3.32% from other races, and 1.40% from two or more races. 7.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,108 households out of which 30.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.4% are married couples living together, 21.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.9% are non-families. 33.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 2.97. In the town the population is spread out with 21.6% under the age of 18, 11.1% from 18 to 24, 35.0% from 25 to 44, 16.9% from 45 to 64, and 15.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 132.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 140.4 males. The median income for a household in the town is $22,933, and the median income for a family is $33,984. Males have a median income of $29,500 versus $19,861 for females. The per capita income for the town is $11,420. 24.8% of the population and 20.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 32.8% of those under the age of 18 and 26.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
