Troy, Missouri

Troy is a city located in Lincoln County, Missouri. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,737. It is the county seat of Lincoln County.

Geography

Troy is located at 38°58'30" North, 90°58'38" West (38.974922, -90.977132). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 15.4 km² (5.9 mi²). 15.4 km² (5.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.17% is water.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there are 6,737 people, 2,521 households, and 1,747 families residing in the city. The population density is 437.9/km² (1,134.5/mi²). There are 2,661 housing units at an average density of 173.0/km² (448.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 93.87% White, 2.86% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.80% from other races, and 1.93% from two or more races. 1.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 2,521 households out of which 39.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% are married couples living together, 14.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% are non-families. 26.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.56 and the average family size is 3.10. In the city the population is spread out with 29.8% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 16.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 87.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.7 males. The median income for a household in the city is $40,332, and the median income for a family is $46,818. Males have a median income of $34,750 versus $24,440 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,666. 11.0% of the population and 7.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.4% of those under the age of 18 and 14.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
