Tristo Da CunhaTristão da Cunha or Tristan da Cunha (~1460 - ~1540) was nominated first viceroy of Portuguese India in 1504, but did not take up this post owing to temporary blindness; in 1506 he became commander of a fleet which operated on the east coast of Africa and in the Indies, Alfonso d'Albuquerque having charge of a squadron under da Cunha. After discovering the islands which now bear his name, da Cunha landed in Madagascar, subsequently visiting Mozambique, Brava (where he reduced the Arab power) and Socotra, which he conquered. He also distinguished himself in the Indies in various actions. In 1514 he served as ambassador to Pope Leo X to pay homage for the new conquests of Portugal, and was, later on, made a member of the Portuguese privy council. Eventhough he did not become viceroy of India, his son, Nuno da Cunha, became the 9th Governor of India in 1487. Original text from http://1911encyclopedia.org in Italian: http://erewhon.ticonuno.it/riv/speciali/tristan/storia.htm D.Tristo da Cunha, descendant of the above,6 Dan Iwama Shin Shin Aikido, (Iwama Ryu), started training traditional aikido in 1981 under Barry Knight in Melbourne, Australia. Received 5th Dan Iwama Ryu taijutsu and bukiwaza, from the Great Master Saito, in Iwama. Received 6th Dan Shin Shin Aiki from Kaicho Hitohiro Saito. In 1986 went for the first time to Japan and was uchideshi for six months under Saito Shihan. Then, he returned to Portugal with the duty to create Portugal Aikishuren Dojo, as instructed by Saito Shihan. In 1989 founded Portugal Aikishuren Kai, which introduced traditional Aikido in Portugal. This organization has many dojo(s) headed with students who are themselves uchideshi of Saito Shihan father and son. Since 1986 travelled many times to Japan and stayed as uchideshi with both Saito father and son. Tristo was uchideshi for the last year Saito Shihan was active. After the Great Master Saito passed away, he continued, as a personal option and because the Great Master asked him, with son and successor, the vigorous Hitohiro Saito Shihan. He has gone back since as uchideshi of Hitohiro Shihan, at the Great Masters Saito Dojo, in front of Aiki Jinja. Participated at the inauguration ceremony of Iwama Shin Shin Aikishuren Kai, the organization founded by Hitohiro Saito Shihan to preserve and spread Morihei Ueshibas original aikido and the teachings of father Morihiro Saito. Like many of the students of the Great Master Saito, Tristo da Cunha is also a student of shurikenjutsu, of the Negishi Ryu style, taught by Saito Shihan. In Portugal, Tristo da Cunha named this style Saito Ryu Shuriken Jutsu. He still learns this art from his teacher Hitohiro Saito Shihan. da Cunha, Tristo da Cunha, Tristo da Cunha, Tristo
