Torres Vedras

Torres Vedras is a concelho of the district of Lisbon, whose concelhia capital if point out about 50 quilmetros North of the districts capital. With an area of 405.9 km2, distributed over 20 clienteles, Torres Vedras makes border to the North, with concelho of the Lourinh; to The East with the one of Alenquer; the Southeast with Sobral de Monte Agrao; the South with concelho of Mafra; and the West has the Atlantic Ocean.

(in Jorge Candeias, 18 Jul 1999) Population The Concelho de Torres Vedras presents a very dispersed demographics, with 21 urban agglomerates, where most does not have more than 200 inhabitants. The resident population in the city of Vedras Towers (20,099 inhabitants in the two urban clienteles) represents about 25% of the population of concelho. The population density in concelho is of 178 hab/Km2, from which it was verified a growth of the resident population between 1991 to 2001 of 7,5%. hydrographic resources
   
The main hydrographic resources of this concelho are the rivers Sizandro and Alcabrichel. The first one is born close to a place named the Patameira de Baixo (place of the clientele of Dois Portos) and flows in to the ocean, in the praia azul (Blue Beach), in the place called as the Estuary of the Sizandro, receiving as affluent the ribeiros from Gradil or Pedrulhos, Safarujo, Alpilho, Cuco or Ilhas, Lamorosa, Cheleiros or Dois Portos. The river Alcabrichel is born close to Aldeia Grande (place of the clientele of Maxial) and runs in the ocean in Porto Novo (place of the clientele of Maceira), having for main affluents the Ribeiro do Canial, the Ribeiro da Pedra do Sino, the Regueira da fonte do Casal, the Regueira do Vale Grande and the River of Varzea. In the area of this concelho, is registered 3 mineral water springs: - In the clientele of A dos Cunhados, the aguas Santas of the Vimeiro; - In the clientele of, the Spas of the Cucos; - In the clientele of Ventosa, the Quinta de Charnixe Shore line The Concelho of Torres Vedras possesss more than 20 km of maritime coast where it could be found beaches of rare beauty. Between small quiet beaches and wider sand plazas were exist diverse alternatives for leisure or for the practice windsurf, surf, bodyboard, swimming, fishing, etc. all year round.

Economy

The active population presented in 1991 a tax of activity of 44,2% evolving in 2001 for 47,8%, coming close itself to the values of the concelhos of the urban crown of the city of Lisbon. In relation to the distribution of the resident population for the great sectors of economic activity it is verified great reduction of the primary sector (agriculture...), that it passed from 1991 to 2001 from 19% to 8%, compensating in the great increase of the tertiary sector (57%), while the secondary sector (industry) kept its weight in the total of the sectors(35%). Agriculture The Sub-Region of West has potentialities for one raised degree of policulture determined for a great pedagogical diversity and of abundant water resources. The vine is the most important economical tradition in the Concelho of Torres Vedras. And it has been (on national scale) the greater producer of wine. Also in the component of the cooperative sector, presented itself in first place in the set of the remaining regions of the country. Protecting agriculture has great importance in the coastal band of the concelho of Torres Vedras (clienteles of the Silveira, A-dos-cunhados, S.Pedro da cadeira, Ponte Rol and Campelos) where the main production is tomatoes and green beans.
   
The main destinations of these production are the supplying markets of Lisbon, Malveira and V.F.Xira. Around the city of Torres Vedras there is diverse small pine and Eucalyptus forests, of which we point the pine tree plantation of Penafirme and of the Quinta de Paio Correia. Industry The Municipal Director Plan defines two great categories: Industrial areas as spaces of great dimension, whose physical and economical dimension exceeds the scale of the municipality and Local Industrial Areas, intended to satisfy local necessities of industrial decentralization as well as the setting of small industrial companies. Commerce & Services
   
The city of Vedras Towers is presented as the main tertiary center north of the district of Lisbon, in which the retailing commerce withholds one of the highest density taxes in the country, The wholesale sector of alimentary products presents in the region a significant cooperativism hosting some of the national leaders in the commercial sector. As well has in the areas of Steel products, automobiles and accessories and codfish. The banking and insurances sectors equally discloses one strong implantation in the city, existing about 30 banking agencies and 15 balconies for the insuring activity.
