Tobacco Township, Michigan

Tobacco Township is a township in Gladwin County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 2,552. The city of Beaverton is at the northwest of the township on the boundary with adjacent Beaverton Township.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 91.5 km² (35.3 mi²). 88.1 km² (34.0 mi²) of it is land and 3.4 km² (1.3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.71% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 2,552 people, 1,029 households, and 776 families residing in the township. The population density is 29.0/km² (75.0/mi²). There are 1,399 housing units at an average density of 15.9/km² (41.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 98.98% White, 0.00% African American, 0.12% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.04% from other races, and 0.59% from two or more races. 1.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 1,029 households out of which 27.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 66.8% are married couples living together, 5.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.5% are non-families. 20.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.85. In the township the population is spread out with 23.0% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 26.3% from 25 to 44, 29.6% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 102.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.6 males. The median income for a household in the township is $40,813, and the median income for a family is $47,539. Males have a median income of $39,934 versus $30,188 for females. The per capita income for the township is $20,037. 8.7% of the population and 7.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.6% of those under the age of 18 and 1.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
