TirupparamkunramTirupparamkunram is a small township, 10 km outside the city of Madurai, in South India. It is mainly known for its temple dedicated to Lord Muruga, who is popularly worshipped as the God of Tamil language. The temple is carved out of a small hill and its architecture, impresses the visitors. According to Hindu Mythology, it is here that Lord Muruga married Deivayani, daughter of the Lord of the Heavens, Indra. In the main shrine, apart from Muruga, deities of Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu, Lord Vinayaka and Goddess Durga are housed. The temple is one among the six sacred shrines ('Arupadaiveedu') dedicated for Lord Muruga, the other ones being Palani (120 km west of Madurai), Svamimalai (150 km east of Madurai), Tiruthani (50 km from Chennai), Alagar Koil (10 km north of Madurai) and Tiruchandur (100 km south of Madurai). One of the curious thing about this temple is that, the Gods Shiva and Vishnu face each other in the main shrine, and this is a rare thing in ancient Hindu temples. This is because of the fact that, Hinduism always held two distinct worshipping groups - Shivites (worshippers of Lord Shiva) and Vaishnavites (worshippers of Lord Vishnu). Outside the temple there is a beautiful pond where, according to Temple tradition, the fishes are served with salt and rice flakes by the devotees. There is also a Vedic school adjacent to the banks of the temple pond. Near the temple, is situated the biggest engineering college in South Tamilnadu - Thiagarajar College of Engineering. The adjacent locality of Tirunagar provides a decent Middle-class environment that supports Tirupparamkunram and its surroundings. The ideal time to visit this place is in the months of January - April and July-September, when most of the Hindu festivals take place.
