Tipton County is a county located in the state of Tennessee. As of 2000, the population is 51,271. Its county seat is Covington6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,230 km² (475 mi²). 1,190 km² (459 mi²) of it is land and 40 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.23% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 51,271 people, 18,106 households, and 14,176 families residing in the county. The population density is 43/km² (112/mi²). There are 19,064 housing units at an average density of 16/km² (42/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 77.86% White, 19.90% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 1.04% from two or more races. 1.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 18,106 households out of which 39.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.20% are married couples living together, 13.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 21.70% are non-families. 18.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.78 and the average family size is 3.17. In the county, the population is spread out with 29.30% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 30.40% from 25 to 44, 21.80% from 45 to 64, and 9.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 97.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.20 males. The median income for a household in the county is $41,856, and the median income for a family is $46,807. Males have a median income of $35,611 versus $23,559 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,952. 12.10% of the population and 10.30% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.30% of those under the age of 18 and 17.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
