Thuringowa, Queensland

Thuringowa is a city in northern Queensland, Australia that covers the northern and western parts of the urban area usually referred to as Townsville. Prior to its proclamation as a city on 1 January, 1986, Thuringowa was a rural shire, almost surrounding the city of Townsville. Thuringowa has grown in population quickly, becoming the fastest growing local region in Australia at the last census. The population has increased from 26,000 in 1986 to over 56,000 as of 2004. Although mainly a residential area, Thuringowa does include several significant industrial and commercial enterprises, notably the Yabulu nickel refinery.
