This I Believe
"This I Believe"
was a
1950s
(
1951
-
1955
)
radio program
hosted by journalist
Edward R. Murrow
which encouraged famous and everyday people to write short
essays
about their guiding principles in life. The show was a cultural phenomenon that tried to show morals and prinicple during the darker days of the
Cold War
. Recently the show has been revived by
Jay Allison
on
National Public Radio
(NPR). Murrow said that contributors to the program "need have nothing more in common than integrity, a real honesty." In the show's peak it was drawing a daily listenership of millions and a book spawned by the show was outsold that year (
1952
) only by the
Bible
. The book, also called "This I Believe", was edited by Murrow and included 100 short personal essays. Some notable contributors of "This I Believe" were
Eleanor Roosevelt
,
Albert Einstein
,
Jackie Robinson
,
Helen Keller
and
Harry Truman
. The revival expects to have entries from
Colin Powell
,
Muhammad Ali
,
Hillary Clinton
,
Newt Gingrich
and they are accepting submissions from the general public.
