The Remarkables, New Zealand

The Remarkables are a mountain range and skifield in the South Island of New Zealand. Located on the southeastern shore of Lake Wakatipu, the range lives up to its name by rising sharply to create an impressive backdrop for the waters. The range is clearly visible from the nearby town of Queenstown. High points in the range include Double Cone (2340 metres) and Ben Nevis (2330 metres - named after the Scottish mountain of the same name). The skifield is 540 acres (2.2 km²) with 5 lifts and is located south of Queenstown. The ski season runs from July to October. The mountains were alledgedly named The Remarkables because they are one of only two mountain ranges in the world which run directly north to south. The other being...
