The Pingry School

The Pingry School is a private college preparatory day school for K-12 education with two campuses in New Jersey. The Short Hills campus is for students in kindergarten through the 6th grade, and the Martinsville campus is for grades 7 to 12. The School is regarded for excellent education, and has a history of praise from universities around the nation. Dr. John F. Pingry founded the school in Elizabeth, New Jersey in 1861 as a boy's school. He was also the headmaster until 1892. In the 1970s Pingry became co-educational. Since Pingry's day, there have been 14 headmasters, including Nathaniel Conard whose appointment becomes effective July 1, 2005. A huge part of the Pingry Community is the Honor Code by which all students must agree to participate. The Honor Code deals with school work (including issues such as cheating and lying), but also extends to all parts of a student's life. Pingry's motto is "Maxima reverentia pueris debetur," a Latin phrase literally meaning "The greatest respect is owed to the boys," though since becoming co-educational, the school has changed its translation to "The greatest respect is owed to the students."
