The Mummy (1999 Movie)The Mummy is a 1999 movie written and directed by Stephen Sommers and starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, with Arnold Vosloo as the reanimated mummy of the title. It is a loose remake of The Mummy (1932), which starred Boris Karloff as the mummy. A sequel, The Mummy Returns, was released in 2001. The Scorpion King, a spin-off featuring a character from The Mummy Returns, was released in 2002. There is also a spin-off television series, (2001), broadcast on The WB network in the United States and BBC1 and the CBBC channel in Britain. English Computer games developers Rebellion created a spin-off game for Universal Studios Interactive division for the PC, Playstation and Dreamcast. Various platform versions were released throughout 1999 and 2000. Tagline: The sands will rise. The heavens will part. The power will be unleashed. Plot In this version, the mummy is a traitorous High Priest named Imhotep (Vosloo) who has an affair with the pharaoh's mistress, Anck-su-namun. They kill the pharaoh when he discovers this, but Imhotep is buried alive with flesh-eating scarab beetles, under a nasty curse that would unleash pure evil if he were released. Centuries later, in 1926, librarian and aspiring archaeologist Evelyn (Weisz) and her bumbling brother Jonathan contact a prisoner, Richard "Rick" O'Connell (Fraser), who happens to know the location of lost treasure and Hamunaptra--the "City of the Dead". They journey with a guide, but the expedition becomes a race against a group of obnoxious Americans, who are being led by Benny, an old associate of O'Connell's who also knows how to find Hamunaptra. They are also attacked by members of a secret society devoted to making sure the lost city remains lost. However, they make it to the city, where everyone digs up old artifacts that should have been left buried and the guide is killed by flesh-eating scarabs. Imhotep is accidentally released, and begins killing the Americans, using their life-force to complete his resurrection; Benny survives by pledging allegiance to Imhotep. Imhotep eventually brings the Ten Plagues of Moses, and captures Evelyn, intending to use her to resurrect his long-dead lover. Rick and Jonathan, with the reluctant assistance of Benny, rescue Evelyn and thwart Imhotep. As they are leaving Hamunaptra, Benny falls behind to plunder the treasures of the lost city, and is trapped with a swarm of flesh-eating scarabs.
