The Laramie Project

The Laramie Project is a play by Moiss Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project, collected from Wyoming interviews, about the reaction to the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, who was beaten and left to die in Laramie, Wyoming because he was gay. It is a compilation of over 200 interviews conducted by the theater company with inhabitants of the town. It was made into a 2002 film of the same name (also written and directed by Kaufman), which starred Christina Ricci, Steve Buscemi, Kathy Bates, Laura Linney, Summer Phoenix, Joshua Jackson, Clea Duvall and Janeane Garofalo. The film employs a documentary style but includes actual events re-enacted by actors.
