The Fortune of War (1979) is a novel by Patrick O'Brian, the sixth in the Aubrey–Maturin series. Set during the War of 1812, it contains lightly fictionalized accounts of the battles between HMS Java and USS Constitution, and between HMS Shannon and USS Chesapeake. This book extensively explores Stephen Maturin's character while he and Jack Aubrey are held captive in Boston, as he is able to manifest his various roles; doctor, spy, and tormented lover.
