The Fog

The Fog is a 1980 horror movie directed by John Carpenter, who also wrote the screenplay and composed the music of the film. The Fog stars Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins and Jamie's mother Janet Leigh. The movie is a classical ghost story, and takes place in a Northern California fishing town named Antonio Bay (real location Inverness CA and Pt. Reyes lighthouse). The town is about to celebrate its Centenary, when a mysterious glowing fog seems to be spreading over land and sea. But something seems to exist in the fog. The crew of the Clipper that sank 100 years ago in the area is back seeking revenge, and they do have a serious reason to do it. The movie relies mainly on atmosphere for its chills, and achieves its task successfully. It works fine especially if someone is going to watch it during a stormy night. Carpenter shot the movie almost two times, because he was not satisfied with the original result. The film did not get good reviews at the time it was played in theaters, but turned out to be a commercial success. The Fog remains for some fans their favourite Carpenter film and for others their favourite horror movie overall. While it is certainly a good ghost story with excellent photography and one of Carpenter's most successful music compositions ever, not much should be anticipated if you have never seen the film before. The movie has been released on DVD on a special edition, but the die hard fans seem to prefer the Laserdisc Special Edition, which among others includes the original Carpenter's Score, which is not available in this original form on a CD. At this time a remake is in production, which will be released probably in the year 2005.
